World Wetlands Day 2001 in Anatidae key sites

Waterbird census in the Naujan Lake National Park, an Anatidae Network Site and a Ramsar Site, was co-ordinated by the Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau (PAWB), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Republic of the Philippines, in a scheme of Asian Waterfowl Census, with celebrating World Wetlands Day 2001. Staff of the Bureau with some experts and Anatidae Flyway Officer took a boat on the lake, and surveyed along the coast in two hours.

Along the western marsh of the lake, herons (purple and gray), egrets (great, intermidiate, and little), bitterns (black, Chinese little and cinammon), moorhen, wandering whistling duck, and whiskered tern were counted. A large flock of 11,000 tufted ducks was in roosting on the north-eastern part of the lake -- the area was deepest in the lake and facing to the forested hillsides along the eastern coast.

The "Action Plan for the Conservation of Migratory Anatidae in the East Asian Flyway" is a component of the "Asia-Pacific Migratory Waterbird Conservation Strategy", and the "Anatidae Site Network in the East Asian Flyway" is a programme of international co-operation to enhance the conservation of the wetlands of international importance for Anatidae (ducks, geese and swans) in the flyway under the "Action Plan". The "Anatidae Working Group" of Asia-Pacific Migratory Waterbird Conservation Committee oversees the implementation of these programmes with technical support from Anatidae Flyway Officer.
