The site "Torey Lakes" provides a representative example of natural wetlands of the Mongol-Manzurian steppe with the largest enlosed soda lakes in the Trans-Baikal area of Chita Region, near the border with Mongolia, a Ramsar Site (172,500 ha, 49°55' - 50°14'N, 115°05' - 115°58'E). The site consists of two large lakes of Barun-Torey and Zoon-Torey, and terrestrial steppe ecosystems. The site includes the Daursky Zapovednik (44,752 ha) that composes the Dauria International Protected Area with the Mongol-Daguur Zapovednik (Mongolia) and the Dallay-Nor Nature Reserve (China).

The site is an important staging area for migratory Anatidae including c. 2,500 geese (Anser anser, A. fabalis serrirostris and A.f. middendorfi), 5,000 shelducks (Tadorna ferruginea and T. tadorna), 20,000 ducks (Anas platyrhynchos, A. poecilorhyncha, A. crecca, A. formosa, A. falcata, A. strepera, A. penelope, A. acuta, A. clypeata and Aythya ferina).

A number of rare and endangered waterbird species, including Swan Goose Anser cygnoides (6-52 pairs) and Baer's Pochard Aythya baeri (1-2 pairs), breed on Lake Barun-Torey.
