The Zapovednik compose of several different types of tundra (about 1,600,000 ha, 73°50'N, 100°00'E).

There have been recorded 19 species of Anatidae. One of the main area is Verkhnaya Taimyra Delta and surrounding river valleys, where supports up to 50,000-70,000 moulting White-fronted Geese Anser albifrons (western Palearctic populations) and 1,000-2,000 Bean Geese A. fabalis (likely to be of East Asian Flyway).

Other important areas are Bikada and Yamutarida River Lower Reaches and surrounding coasts of Taimyr Lake. Gusikha River and coasts of Pronchisheva Bay Coasts and surroundings; Logata River Basin. All these areas have at least about 30,000-40,000 ducks (King Eider Somateria spectabilis, Steller's Eider Polysticta stelleri, Long-tailed DucksClangula hyemalis which belong to East Asian populations) and up to 2,000-3,000 East Asian Bean Goose breeding and moulting. Up to 100-150 Tundra Swans Cygnus bewickii of unknown population belonging but likely East Asian one.

Administration of the Zapovednik annually monitors key areas under supervision of Dr. Elena Pospelova - Deputy Director of Zapovednik, Head of research.

The "Action Plan for the Conservation of Migratory Anatidae in the East Asian Flyway" is a component of the "Asia-Pacific Migratory Waterbird Conservation Strategy", and the "Anatidae Site Network in the East Asian Flyway" is a programme of international co-operation to enhance the conservation of the wetlands of international importance for Anatidae (ducks, geese and swans) in the flyway under the "Action Plan". The "Anatidae Working Group" of Asia-Pacific Migratory Waterbird Conservation Committee oversees the implementation of these programmes with technical support from Anatidae Flyway Officer.
