Introduction to the Network Sites

Selenga Delta

Buryat Republic, Russian Federation

[ in Japanese ] [ Back ]

The Selenga Delta is the largest delta (54,000 ha) where the Selenga River flows into the Lake Baikal, Kabansky District of Buryat Republic. The site is the area of the Kabansky Zakaznik (12,100 ha) in the central part of the delta, a Ramsar Site (52°12' - 52°22'N, 106°15' - 106°29'E). It is mainly composed of small shallow lakes and regularly flooded meadows.

The Delta supports large concentration of Anatidae populations in breeding, moulting and migration period. The total breeding population of Anatidae varies from year to year between 20,000 and 138,000 individuals. The composition of duck nests in the Delta was estimated 61% dabbling duck and 39% diving ducks.

The 8,000-10,000 male ducks from adjacent areas form moult assemblage in the Delta, including such species as Wigeon Anas penelope, Teal A. crecca, Falcated Duck A. falcata and Pintail A. acuta.

During the autumn (southward) migration, it is estimated that 7,300 to 18,300 individuals of Anatidae stay in the site from about five million individuals passing through the Delta.

A number of bird species listed in the Russian Red Data Book occur in the delta, including Bewick's Swan Cygnus bewickii and Swan Goose Anser cygnoides during their migration. The Buryat Red Data Book species occur in addition to the above, including Whooper Swan Cygnus cygnus, Spot-billed Duck Anas pecilorhyncha (5-6 nests per 100ha) and Falcated Duck A. falcata (4 nests per 100ha) in the breeding season.

The management authorities of the Site are:

Summarised from Information Sheet on Ramsar Wetlands, compiled in June 1997 by Vladimir V. Baskakov, Baikalsky Nature Reserve and V.G. Vinogradov, Moscow.

Further information of the Site can be found on the internet at:

The "Action Plan for the Conservation of Migratory Anatidae in the East Asian Flyway" is a component of the "Asia-Pacific Migratory Waterbird Conservation Strategy", and the "Anatidae Site Network in the East Asian Flyway" is a programme of international co-operation to enhance the conservation of the wetlands of international importance for Anatidae (ducks, geese and swans) in the flyway under the "Action Plan". The "Anatidae Working Group" of Asia-Pacific Migratory Waterbird Conservation Committee oversees the implementation of these programmes with technical support from Anatidae Flyway Officer.
